Disscusion Journal: Phobias

Journal Entry: Sat Oct 4, 2008, 11:10 AM
:iconfraulein-ermordung::iconarbokcobra::iconsuperanne::iconveele::icongotquidditch:

I posted an entry on LJ a bit ago about a specific phobia I have and I was actually curious as to the other ones out that that other people have.

I know there are lists online describing different fears and what they are but I'm genuinely curious as to real-life examples and how you guys deal with them yourselves?

I myself have a bunch of phobias/fears
Spiders
Being alone in the dark / mirrors in the dark
Talking on the phone (which is my biggest one, I'd honestly rather be in a dark room with spiders for 5 minutes than make a 5 minute phonecall if I could choose)

I try to deal with them by telling myself they're irrational and there's nothing harmful about any of them (well spiders can be poisonous but that's not why Im afraid of them xD... because I love other things such as snakes)

The way I actually dealt with my phobia of bees and overcame it was being around bumblebees and closing my eyes. After spending more and more time doing this now Im able to get close to them, completely aware and not care. (Wasps are another story because those are MEAN little bastards >:C....)

But yeah the point of this journal is for personal stories of phobias and ways you either overcame them or good ways you found to deal with them... or heck.. just about your fears in general c:

Talking on the phone - welcome in the club. I have the same problem

I hate talking on the phone - I don't know what I think is going to happen if I do it, but I usually try to get the conversation over and done with as quickly as possible...

As for wasps, they are indeed the spawn of satan - We had 4 or 5 flying around in our geography classroom for about a month back in school a few years ago and I can still remember it now. :fear: I find it very hard to go near a bin or into a room if there is a wasp there...

When someone tries to strike up a conversation with me. I make them feel awkward with my one worded answers and that makes me feel bad. I try to be more sociable but they always feel awkward. I have yet to overcome it.

I'm horribly afraid of needles, which I've found out is called Trypanophobia.
When I was kid I had to go to the hosiptal for two weeks in a row and everytime I went they took a sample of blood from me. I believe thats where my fear came from.

Now a days, I can't even go to the doctor's without worrying whether I might need a shot or not.
Flu season is the worst though, when my mom freaks out about us all getting sick and makes us go get these shots >__>
I always leave those offices bawling.

I am absolutely terrified of crickets. And grasshoppers.

Think of how some people get about spiders, and that's how I am about insects that jump. I don't have any way to rationalize it, I just run away. >__> But I can pick up spiders in my bare hands!

And I'm the same way about being alone in the dark. I'm okay around mirrors unless I let myself think about a scary story or movie, then I get twitchy. But I sleep with a light on, and the TV on. I tell myself that I'm being an idiot, and that nothing will happen, but I get freaked out anyway.

I'm quite sure I wouldn't have these problems if I hadn't read so many Goosebumps books and watched so much Are You Afraid of the Dark? as a kid.

I can't be in large open spaces or very long.
Being in the artists' alley at AC wasn't too bad since there were so many people and I was sort of near a corner.

I get extremely paranoid in that sort of situation. I guess it's really human instinct since you can be easily picked off out in the open.

Hight - I hate being high up. It's so scary to look far down...though I'm not afraid of flying.
Spiders - I stop dead in my tracks, freezing the instant I recognize something as a spider, or I jump/walk backwards.
Talking on the phone-...kinda Starting to get over this one as grandma is always the one calling and I'm only answering "yes" "no" "mhm" and such xD
Talk with people - yup. I don't feel to comfortable talking with people, and I really don't like asking about stuff. (Typing is better.)

I don't have any really fears, just stuff I don't feel comfortable doing. Did had a big fear of cockroaches when I was little. I still get a little bump of fear when I see them, but I'm like, oh, it's a cockroach.
